Green light given to serve alcohol on Perth party island

The world’s biggest floating entertainment venue could soon be home to WA, with Barge Co. granted a liquor licence to operate off Elizabeth Quay, Coogee and Port Beaches.

The $7.3 million proposal involved a 50 metre two-storey barge, a swimming pool for up to 20 people, palm trees and three bars to hold 600 patrons.

"It’s actually a venue, not just a small bar, we are a venue and open to all sorts of performing arts, we’ve been working with the WA Symphony Orchestra," Managing Director Guy Mouritz told 9NEWS.

The liquor licence is dependent on a number of conditions – lifeguards must be on at all times, people are not allowed to swim off the barge and glass is to be kept out of the pool.

Before the proposal can proceed, the licence must be approved by state environment minister Stephen Dawson, who is considering to applications for the floating venues.

Barge Co. is hoping to open for business for next summer.
