Two truck drivers have been killed in a catastrophic crash on the Great Eastern Highway west of Perth.

A major police investigation is under way into how the two vehicles collided just outside Meckering.

All that was left behind were the burn-out shells of the trucks. 9News

The two road trains collided on Wednesday morning, with the first emergency call made at 6.45am.

The impact of the crash sparked a fireball that engulfed both vehicles.

One truck was towing a refrigeration semi-trailer, while the other was left unrecognisable after the crash.

Both male drivers, aged 56 and 33, died on impact.

Other truck drivers, locals and volunteer firefighters were the first on the scene.

“My thoughts are with those first responders who witnessed a very serious and horrific scene,” Police Minister Reece Whitby said.

A rescue helicopter had been called but was stood down soon after.

The blaze was so intense it took firefighters almost an hour to bring it under control.

A seven-kilometre stretch of the highway was closed as major crash investigators probed the scene, mapping out the moments before impact.

The country patch of road is generally used by large trucks and tourists.

“We certainly don’t want to speculate on the cause of the crash and whether the road condition was one of the factors, but certainly the Great Eastern Highway could do with some serious funding,” Shire of Cunderdin President Alison Harris said.

Police have urged any witnesses or people with relevant dashcam footage to come forward.
