Perth grandfather dies in hospital after brutal random bashing

A Western Australian grandfather who was brutally bashed in a random attack has died in hospital.

Emiliano Lombardi was allegedly attacked outside his East Cannington home in Perth on August 16 with a piece of broken mirror.

It is believed the 84-year-old heard a disturbance outside his home around 7pm, and was set upon as he left his home to investigate the noise.

Mr Lombardi was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital the next day and remained in intensive care until his death.

"We're incredibly sad for the loss of our dad," his daughter said today.

"He wasn't in pain and he passed peacefully."

WA Premier Mark McGowan today said he was "deeply saddened" by Mr Lombardi's death.

News of the attack prompted an outpouring support from his local community.

Local tradespeople helped plaster Mr Lombardi's house including paint and plaster repair, a new mattress after his old one was stained with blood and a local vet organised dog sitting for the grandfather's pets.

Neighbours visit his property daily to feed his chickens and tend to his much-loved vegetable patch.

Cannington Detectives arrested two people as part of an ongoing investigation into the attack, a 28-year-old man from Seville Grove and a 24-year-old man from Armadale.

The 28-year-old man was charged with the attack on Mr Lombardi, as well as an assault on a man and woman in their 20s and an indecent assault on a woman in her 40s.

Detectives will allege the attack was one part of serious rampage including a number of assaults, extensive graffiti damage, a house brick thrown through a window and several damaged letterboxes.

The investigation continues.
