A mother accused of killing her two-month-old daughter has been sent to a psychiatric hospital after a prison nurse raised concerns about her mental health.

Melanie Pears, 30, appeared in Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court via video link from Bandyup prison on Wednesday for a bail application hearing, but was instead handed a seven-day hospital order to assess her psychiatric fitness.

The infant's father, 50-year-old Tony James Paraha, is accused of manslaughter and will appear in court again on March 9.
