A thief with expensive taste is on the run from police after swiping a limited-edition bottle of whisky worth $62,000 from a boutique bottle shop in Melbourne.

Victoria Police say the man entered the liquor store at an entertainment complex off Whiteman Street in Southbank on May 22.

The man struck up a conversation with a female staff member and requested to look at a number of bottles of alcohol.

When her back was turned, the thief performed his sleight of hand, grabbing a bottle of Johnnie Walker Masters of Flavour from the shelf and hiding it down the front of his shorts.

The man then left the store.
