Emily McPherson

Emily McPherson is a senior reporter at nine.com.au, with a special interest in social justice issues.

Experience

Emily first began her career as a junior reporter, filing stories for the Inner West Courier newspaper in Sydney. This turned out to be a baptism of fire. Within months of being assigned the Ashfield Council beat, the mayor was involved in a major corruption scandal after he was caught on camera allegedly accepting a wad of cash from a developer (this was later revealed to be an elaborate set-up).

After honing her craft covering councils and community events, Emily joined the Sydney bureau of Japan's leading news agency, Kyodo News. There, she reported on Australian news for English-language readers in Japan—covering everything from shark attacks to APEC summits.

Moving into digital journalism, she then joined 9News as an online associate producer. Emily sharpened her skills in digital news production and breaking news, eventually stepping into a producer role.

Emily's passion lies in giving a voice to people whose experiences are often overlooked or misunderstood—such as those harmed by the Centrelink robodebt scheme or immigrants battling to stay in Australia.

Education

Emily completed a Bachelor of Arts in Communication, Journalism and International Studies at the University of Technology, Sydney.

Awards and Recognition

In 2017, Emily was named the Mumbrella Journalist of the Year and also won the Kennedy Award for Outstanding Online News Breaking. In 2025, Emily won Mediaweek's Next of the Best Journalist Award for her work in the social justice arena.
