Woman, 56, assaulted by carjacker after returning from preschool drop off in Victoria

Police are searching for a man after a woman was assaulted and carjacked after she dropped her daughter at preschool care in Victoria.

The unknown offender approached a woman's Mazda CX5 in the car park of Lara Primary School in Lara, around 16km west of Geelong, about 7.05am, according to police.

The man threatened the driver, a 56-year-old woman, before pushing her out and stealing the car.

Victoria Police Detective Senior Constable Paul Stokes said the woman left her car for a few minutes when she returned to find someone trying to steal it.

He said the unknown male demanded she get out of the car and threatened to stab her before driving away.

"It's very low-life behaviour, the victim has just attended school to drop her daughter off and got an unpleasant surprise in the car," Stokes said.

"You wouldn't expect this kind of thing when you're simply dropping off your kid at school."

Stokes said police are still trying to find the man and the stolen car.

The offender has been described as Caucasian and unshaven with a slim build.

Police asked if anyone sees a car with the plates AFM362 to contact police or ring triple zero.

An investigation remains ongoing.
