Relatives of a two-year-old girl, who escaped from a childcare centre in Melbourne's west, have slammed the preschool's operators.

It's the second incident in six months at the Werribee centre, where a child has been found wandering outside alone.

The child's grandfather, Duncan Reed was left shaken after his granddaughter, Maisie, escaped from Nido Early School in Werribee on Tuesday, just after 9.30am.

Two-year-old Maisie was found wandering alone along the front of the building yesterday morning, after leaving through an unlocked gate.

Maisie was seen by a parent and brought back to the centre nearly 10 minutes later.

Reed says he is absolutely furious and says the centre has tried to gloss over what has happened.

"Could you imagine if something had happened? She could have been hit by a car, I just can't put it into words," he said.

"I'm so disappointed by the way we have been treated, the way the children have been treated.

"It's not fair. Just tell the truth guys."

The grandfather claimed the facility initially told parents the toddler was simply "left unattended".

It's not the first time this has happened at the facility.

In December, a little boy was caught on camera running along the footpath out the front before wandering out onto the road.

Nido Early School in Werribee declined to comment.

A Department of Education and Training spokesperson said they were investigating a report of an unsupervised child at Nido Early School yesterday.

"The health and safety of all children in early childhood centres is our top priority," the spokesperson said.
