A woman has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after trying to gatecrash a 21st birthday on Victoria's surf coast.

The group was celebrating at a cafe on Bridge Road in Barwon Heads when a fight broke out just before 11pm.

A 55-year-old man who attended the party was also taken to hospital under police guard before being released late last night ahead of expected charges.

The woman, aged in her 40s, was injured during an alleged violent altercation, 9News

Police allege the 45-year-old woman was hurt in a physical altercation outside the venue.

She was airlifted to hospital and was in a serious condition last night.

The man, who is from Cremorne in central Melbourne, was interviewed and released pending summons.

The cafe owner said they were "devastated," after the incident in the town near Geelong.
