Uber Eats introduces new minimum spend charge on groceries

Popular app Uber Eats has announced it will start charging for its grocery delivery services.

The app, which offers restaurant delivery as well as groceries and alcohol, said from next week it will add a new fee.

If shoppers order less than $10 worth of items they'll be slapped with a $2.99 charge.

The service delivers items from grocery shops, bottle shops and convenience shops.

It does not apply to people ordering takeaway food to be delivered form cafes and restaurants.

The company insists it won't affect many customers.

"As the majority of people are already spending more than $10 on items each time they order from a store on our platform, it's not a change we anticipate will be felt by many - but it will allow us to operate a more efficient platform," it said in an email to customers.

Last month the company warned prices could increase by 85 per cent if Labor passes a bill which would set minimum pay for gig economy workers.

In May it hiked costs for travel by four per cent.

However, it now offers planet-friendly electric cars as an option for riders for no extra cost.
