Australian scaffolder needs stitches after 'cowardly' attack in Bali

Upsetting footage has emerged of a Perth man being beaten up in Bali.

Matthew Stevenson from Midland says half a dozen partygoers turned on him, leaving him needing 10 stitches in his head.

Stevenson was partying with friends on Thursday at a nightclub in the party area of Kuta.

He says he was dancing with a girl whose brother then turned on him.

"This guy out of nowhere just pushes me," he said.

Half an hour later Matt and his friends decided to call it a night.

Then things escalated.

"The guy put me in a headlock, he choked me out and then dropped me to fall and I've hit my head," he said.

He was also robbed, he said, with a "pool of blood" left behind.

He was taken to hospital where he was treated for multiple cuts and needed 10 stitches to the back of his head.

But the 27-year-old fears there could be more wrong with him.

"(I) just have constant headaches and I'm on painkillers from the hospital and antibiotics so they help, but last night I couldn't sleep," he said.

"I'm still bleeding a bit out of my head. I think I might have a broken cheek or eye socket."

The scaffolder is supposed to be flying home tomorrow in time for his brother's wedding

But he's left in limbo as he said he also had his phone, passport and money stolen.

9News understands one man is now in custody.

Stevenson hopes others will be held accountable.

"People die from that sort of attack you know, that's just cowardly," he said.

"After seeing the footage, I realise how close it could've come."
