Former foreign minister Julie Bishop has paid tribute to Olivia Newton-John for raising the profile of Australia on the world stage.

"She was a huge draw card in the United States," Bishop told Today.

"We held this G'Day USA event every year. Olivia Newton-John was always the top of my list. I wanted Olivia there because she would draw such a crowd.
