A road worker has suffered serious injuries after being crushed by a ride-on roller while working near a major Sydney motorway.

Emergency services were called to westbound lanes on the M2 at about 10.50pm on Wednesday night after reports of an injury to a worker who was near the Beecroft Road exit at Cheltenham in Sydney’s north-west.

A worker, 62, was found to have been hit by a ride-on roller that was believed to be driving over bitumen.

The man was treated for serious injuries, and was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital.

A spokesperson for the hospital told nine.com.au on Thursday afternoon the man was in a critical condition.

The driver was taken to hospital for mandatory testing, with a crime scene established and an investigation underway.

SafeWork NSW told nine.com.au it had been notified about the incident and was making its own enquiries.
