First responder describes 'confronting' scenes arriving at Hunter Valley bus crash site

One of the first emergency responders to arrive at the devastating Hunter Valley wedding bus crash site said what he arrived to was "like something he'd never seen before".

Ten wedding guests were killed and another 25 injured when the bus taking them from the reception to accommodation overturned on Wine Country Drive, near Greta late on Sunday.

NSW Ambulance Service Commander Luke Wiseman told Today no matter how much training an officer has for that type of situation, it is always confronting when you attend.

"It was pretty confronting, especially considering the remote location of the area as well," Wiseman told Today.

"The resources to have an ambulance on scene within seven minutes, to have multiple rescue units achieving what they need to achieve, to have a total of five helicopters land close by to the scene, to have the police assist us in providing blood for those that needed it, it was a scene that I've never seen before.

"It was a scene that just worked so well to deliver amazing care to those that needed it."

The crash is one of NSW worst mass-casualty accidents in 30 years and Wiseman praised the teams who attended to help.

"It is a major incident and it did overrun our resources for some time until we were actually able to provide the appropriate response," he said.

"The help that we actually did provide them was phenomenal, they implemented it amazingly in exceptionally challenging circumstances."
