The road where a bus fatally overturned in the Hunter Valley in New South Wales on Sunday night, devastating a local community, has re-opened.

Wine Country Drive had been closed between the New England Highway and Bridge Street, near Greta, after the horror crash claimed 10 lives.

The bus itself was removed from the area on Monday night for mechanical analysis.

"Whilst we train for this day in and day out, it is different and it is confronting once you get it in such a situation," he told Today.

"It is a major incident, it did overrun our resources for some time until we were actually able to provide the appropriate response."

He said the scale of the response, including multiple helicopters and ambulance crews at a remote location, and blood supplied by police, was a scene he had not encountered before.
