A partygoer has had part of his ear bitten off during a dancefloor scuffle in Sydney's west.

About 2am on Sunday, a fight broke out on the dance floor of a Liverpool club, which was hosting an event for the Fijian-Indian community.

Police Inspector Julie Pillott says police don't know for sure how the fight started but it may have been just a bump during dancing.

"The victim believes he was bitten and it appears that might be the case," she told AAP.

However police will wait for medical confirmation, Insp Pillot added.

The biter has not been identified and police are calling for anyone who witnessed the attack to come forward.

Insp Pillott says police will also review CCTV footage.

The injured 35-year-old man was taken to Liverpool Hospital for treatment.
