Smoke haze hits Sydney for second time in a week

Sydney has woken to another smoke haze, days after the city was choked by the effects of hazard reduction burns.

The NSW Rural Fire Service said while it has not resumed burns in the Greater Sydney area, residual smoke from a burn in Lawson in the Blue Mountains is affecting the city.

The organisation posted on Facebook: “We are still holding off any hazard reduction burns in the Greater Sydney area tomorrow, however some residual smoke from the Lawson burn in the Blue Mountains will be seen in the Sydney basin. National Parks and Wildlife Service firefighters will continue to monitor this burn over coming days.”

Earlier this week health officials issued warnings over the smoke which hung over the city.

On Wednesday the smoke covered much of the city’s famous skyline, with the Harbour Bridge barely visible from some suburbs. It also affected Sydney’s west, the Blue Mountains and Newcastle.

NSW’s Office of Environment labelled Sydney’s air quality “poor” and urged people with health issues to remain indoors.
