The long-anticipated opening of the Sydney Metro will be delayed as the national safety regulator has not yet ticked off on the project.

The city section of the Metro was slated to open this Sunday, however, the opening has now been delayed as the National Rail Safety Regulator needs to complete its final safety assessments, Transport Minister Jo Hyalen told media today.

It is unclear how much longer commuters will need to wait until the Metro opens.

"Unfortunately, passengers are going to have to wait until we open Sydney Metro but not that much longer...it will be worth it," Haylen said.

"We do need a little more time for the safety regulator to give us the final tick of approval.

"I have also said that safety and reliability comes first and I'm not in the business of putting additional pressure on the National safety regulator"

Haylen said the railway is safe and the process is just a matter of "independent assurance".

She also said that 43 trains have been tested in over 200 exercises on the metro.

The national safety regulator still needs to tick off four more safety exercises, Haylen said.

Construction on the Sydney Metro and Metro West started in 2020, with an overblown budget of $25.32 billion.

The initial projected budget was $13 billion.
