Sydney home targeted by suspected second firebombing in a week

Police are today investigating the cause of a fire in a luxury $300,000 car that damaged a southern Sydney home.

The home at Barnards Avenue in Hurstville suffered external damage, with the glass windows blown out, after the incident overnight.

Emergency services were called to the property just after midnight following reports about a car fire.

The blaze spread quickly and burned the front of the garage and the bedroom in the second storey of the home.

A family of five who live at the property were inside when the fire started but managed to escape before the blaze took hold.

New South Wales Fire and Rescue said six crews attended the incident.

They extinguished the blaze after about 20 minutes but the car - a luxury Mercedes convertible car worth about $300,000 - was destroyed.

Another car parked near the property was also damaged.

Neighbouring properties were safely evacuated and no was one injured.

The overnight fire was not the first time the Mercedes was targeted.

It was set alight last Friday but the fire only caused minor damage.

Police said today a crime scene has been set up and officers have begun an investigation into how the fire started.

A fire at the home occurred only last week, reports say.

Officers have been at the property since early today.

Detectives have seized several items of interest, including large bags, 9News reports.
