Senate candidate proposes pay rise for all

An independent Senate candidate has come up with an election policy millions of Australians will agree with - a 10 per cent pay rise for everyone.

Mohammad Ali, who is standing in South Australia, also wants to lift payments to all welfare recipients and offer tax cuts to small and medium businesses.

He says it's not just his name that will help get him a seat in parliament, notwithstanding that it's spelt slightly different to the legendary boxer.

"I am the one who listens to people because I care about them," he said.

"I actually want to work hard to solve all the problems of Australia."

As well as his 10 per cent pay increase, Mr Ali proposes all welfare payments such as youth allowances, Austudy, all disability pensions, single parenting payments and the aged pension rise by $110 a fortnight.

He will be one of six ungrouped candidates on SA's Senate ballot paper whose only chance of victory is attracting a high number of votes below the line.

It's a tough ask considering there are 64 candidates and only about three per cent of SA voters chose to vote below the line at the 2013 federal election.
