Man, 61, named as driver swept away in NSW floodwaters

The man who died after being swept away in NSW flooding has been named as Tom Cook, 61.

Authorities said he was driving across the Wild Cattle Bridge in Megan, north-east of Dorrigo in rural NSW, on Friday when his ute was swept away.

He managed to cling onto a tree in the area, inland from Coffs Harbour, but couldn't hold on.

Emergency services were unable to reach him in time.

Former neighbour Emma Hohnen said he was "just a typical Aussie, friendly guy".

"He had a dog that he loved, he loved motorcycles," she said.

His body was recovered yesterday afternoon.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his sadness over the loss.

"Tragic news out of New South Wales this evening with confirmation a man has died in floodwaters near Dorrigo," the PM said in a statement.

"Our thoughts are with his loved ones and the community at this heartbreaking time."

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
