The identity of a young girl whose remains were discovered 2km outside a rural South Australia town remains a mystery despite extensive investigations.

About 430 homes have been visited, 380 cars stopped and thousands of people spoken to under the investigation, which has ruled out 135 children considered potential victims, police say.

In late July a motorist found a suitcase containing ragged clothing and other items alongside the bones of the girl, who was aged between two-and-a-half to four years, dumped by the side of Karoonda Highway outside Wynarka, east of Adelaide.
