These included multiple counts of rape, unlawful sexual intercourse, sexual abuse of a child, gross indecency, and indecent assault.

The charges relate to 29 alleged victims, many of whom police claim were children at the time.

The alleged offences were committed between 1978 and 2003.

The man is expected in court today.

The arrest was the result of ongoing work by Task Force Libero, which was established in March last year to investigate allegations of historical child sexual abuse linked to the now-closed juvenile prison Magill Training Centre and other government care facilities.

Police did not say which, if any, facility the man’s alleged offending was connected to.

Support is available from the National Sexual Assault, Domestic and Family Violence Counselling Service at 1800RESPECT (1800 737 732).
