Woman refused bail in Meyers murder case

The mother of the man accused of killing South Australian woman Jody Meyers has been refused bail amid fears she may interfere with witnesses and evidence.

Margaret Archer, 56, who is charged with assisting an offender in connection with the case, appeared by video link in the Supreme Court on Monday where she asked to be allowed to live at her home in Mannum, east of Adelaide.

But Justice Anne Bampton ruled that the risk of Archer - accused of assisting her 30-year-old son Neil - interfering with witnesses or still-missing evidence, such as a mobile phone and bank card, was too great.

Her son is charged with murdering his 20-year-old partner, whose body was found under a concrete slab at his parents' property in September.

Justice Bampton also noted that, if released on bail, Archer would be returning to the same property.

Archer allegedly withdrew $250 from Ms Meyers' bank account and bought bags of concrete in the days following her death.

It is also alleged Archer sent text messages from the dead woman's phone to her family members to divert suspicion, and later tried to intimidate witnesses and hinder investigations against her son.

Defence counsel asked that Archer be released on home detention so she could care for her elderly parents, one of whom has dementia.

Her lawyer said there was no evidence she attempted to intimidate witnesses or risked interfering with the case.

Justice Bampton refused bail, describing the allegations and the strength of the case against Archer as serious.
