Uber customers bombard SA premier's inbox

South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill and Transport Minister Stephen Mullighan have been bombarded with thousands of emails from people wanting to see Uber cars on the state's roads.

The ride sharing company this week started a campaign calling on the state government to legalise its popular uberX service.

Potential Uber customers were on Monday emailed a link that if clicked would send an automated email to Mr Weatherill and Mr Mulligan.

"Since the campaign launched yesterday afternoon, we have seen over 3500 emails sent," an Uber spokeswoman told AAP on Tuesday.

Under existing laws Uber can only offer its more expensive UberBLACK service in South Australia, which uses only accredited drivers in accredited cars.

The company wants SA to join other states in allowing UberX, the popular ride sharing service that gives regular people with a car and a licence the opportunity to become a paid driver.

Mr Mullighan said the government had invited Uber to take part in an independent review into the taxi and chauffeur vehicle industry but the company was yet to engage.

He said the review is looking at ways to improve the industry, with a focus on new technologies.

Uber said ride sharing made sense for South Australia, which had the worst unemployment rate of all Australian states.

"Fifteen thousand new jobs have been created across all other mainland states in the past year," the company said.

"It's time for the minister to act quickly to allow the people of South Australia access to the same opportunities."
