A senior teacher from South Australia has been stood down and is under investigation for wearing a Charlie Kirk costume to school for Halloween last week.

The teacher, Guy Harrison, arrived at work dressed as the assassinated right-wing commentator, with his costume including a "freedom" T-shirt and a fake bullet wound to the neck.

The school principal took immediate action upon seeing the costume.

"The principal saw it and said cover it up and he's been directed away from the school," Education Minister Blair Boyer said.

"When I heard what had been done I just really shook my head," he added, saying the costume was "obviously inappropriate on a whole heap of different levels".

"It would have been pretty confronting to see… this is a person who was murdered."

The incident has prompted a formal inquiry by the South Australian Department of Education.

"We have addressed this matter with students who were aware of the outfit, and have provided wellbeing support," it said.

Urrbrae parent Gemma Wilkinson said she doesn't "feel like it's a sackable offence, but it should be addressed."

"The kids don't dress up for Halloween, so why should the teachers?" she asked.

The education department is yet to comment on the specifics of the investigation, or provide a timeline for its conclusion.
