A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for the highlighted areas of South Australia. (BoM)

Thunderstorms with damaging winds have been forecast to hit parts of South Australia this afternoon, after scorching temperatures earlier sparked extreme fire danger warnings in some parts of the state.

Storms are expected to bring gusts of up to 125 km/h to the Riverland, Murraylands, and parts of the Flinders,  Mid North and Upper South East districts, according to the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM).

The storms have been created by a strong cold front moving from Bordertown toward Renmark.

The damaging conditions may affect the towns of Renmark, Lameroo, Bordertown, Jamestown, Burra and Peterborough.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:

* Secure or put away loose items around your property.
* Move cars under cover or away from trees.
* Keep clear of fallen power lines.
* Stay indoors, away from windows, while storms are nearby
