SA govt silent on tax hike after blaze

South Australia's government is staying tightlipped on speculation victims of a deadly bushfire in the state's mid-north could be slugged with a tax increase.

Opposition Leader Steven Marshall has urged the government to rule out hiking the Emergency Services Levy as it did in the wake of a major bushfire in January.

"Increasing the ESL yet again would add insult to injury to the people who found themselves caught up in the terror and heartache of the Pinery bushfire," he said on Thursday.

Last week's devastating blaze ripped through 82,000 hectares, claiming two lives and destroying almost 500 buildings.

Deputy premier John Rau declined to comment on the issue, saying it would be dealt with in the context of budget processes.

The government is due to hand down its mid-year budget review in coming weeks.
