Queensland pair appear over SA murder

Two Queensland women will face sentencing submissions in October after admitting to killing Adelaide pensioner Robert Whitwell.

Bernadette Burns and Brittney Dwyer travelled from Brisbane to Adelaide last year to rob the 81-year-old, Dwyer's grandfather, of his life savings.

But their plot ended with Mr Whitwell's death and the pair ultimately pleading guilty to his murder.

The pair appeared before the Supreme Court by video link on Tuesday when sentencing submissions were set for October 16.

Prosecutors say Burns, 22, and Dwyer,19, believed Mr Whitwell kept hundreds of thousands of dollars stashed in a backyard shed and have described the killing as "almost sociopathic in style".

Few details have been revealed, but they say Dwyer entered the man's home wearing gloves and armed with the knife and there was an element of preparation, including the long drive.

At her last appearance, lead prosecutor Jim Pearce objected to the proposed tendering of a psychiatric report prepared about Dwyer because it raised allegations that her grandfather may have sexually abused her as a child.

He said the allegations were raised at "one minute to midnight" and in circumstances where Mr Whitwell was unable to defend himself.

Defence counsel Craig Caldicott, said the issues raised in the report were not pressed by the defence and Dwyer was not sure herself whether her "flashbacks" were "real events or not".
