Manslaughter bond breach excused

A man originally jailed for at least 20 years over the abduction, torture and killing of a small-time Adelaide drug dealer has been spared prison again.

Chhay Ly, 31, was given a suspended 22 month jail term and put on a bond in 2012, after pleading guilty to the manslaughter of Paulo Miranda, who disappeared in 2008 and whose body has never been found.

He admitted manslaughter after successfully appealing his conviction for murdering Mr Miranda and his minimum 20-year jail term.

The victim had been lured to Ly's Pooraka house where he was bashed and tortured by two men, one of whom took a photo of Mr Miranda, blindfolded and bleeding.

Ly appeared in the Supreme Court on Tuesday, after pleading guilty to breaching his good-behaviour bond by failing a drug test.

But Justice John Sulan decided to excuse the breach and not require Ly to serve the manslaughter jail term.

He referred to a report by a clinical nurse who said Ly had made considerable progress in respect to his prior drug addiction and was "putting his life in order".

The judge placed Ly on a further 12 month good behaviour bond.
