Security video has shown how an inmate escaped from the Adelaide Remand Centre this morning.

Jason Burdon, who is still on the run, fled through the prison's kitchen area about 10.20am.

Video shows Burdon emerge from an air vent high on the side of the centre, then lower himself onto the footpath with the aid of a string of clothes tied together.

Police say Burdon stole a black e-bike when he first escaped and was seen heading towards Port Road.

Investigators do not believe Burdon poses a threat to the community, describing his offending as "lower end" but would like him to be found as soon as possible.

He was last seen wearing navy blue t-shirt, navy blue shorts with dark coloured socks and work boots.

The centre was privatised by the state government last year, sparking calls today to return it to public hands.
