Jobs to go on SA community services

Job losses in South Australia's community services sector brought on by federal budget cuts will devastate the state economy, a rally in Adelaide has been told.

About 200 community services workers gathered at Parliament House in Adelaide on Tuesday to protest over the cuts that the Australian Services Union (ASU) says could immediately axe up to 400 jobs across the state.

The cuts come into force from July 1, slashing funds to community services programs.

Among those affected are people who work with victims of domestic violence, in the mental health and disability sectors and in community legal aid.

ASU state secretary Joseph Scales said the loss of jobs and services will affect some of the most vulnerable people in the community.

"This is devastating for the workers, for their clients and for the state's economy," Mr Scales said.

"The scale of the job losses in the community service sector will be huge."
