Devastated family and friends are holding out hope despite emergency services calling off the search for a missing fisherman on South Australia's Eyre Peninsula today.

Rodney Green, 57, has not been seen since his small dingy flipped about 7.30pm last night, a few hundred metres offshore at Hall Bay.

Three other passengers – a 40-year-old father and his two sons, aged 10 and 13 – managed to swim to safety, however no trace of Mr Green was found.

9NEWS understands the three survivors were wearing life jackets but Mr Green was not.

"He was able to use a mobile phone and telephone his partner, who then called Triple Zero," Inspector Michael Ball of SA Police said.

Emergency services and locals launched a major search operation today, as family and friends of the missing man waited anxiously by.

Police managed to recover debris from the dingy, while the boat itself was located by police divers on the ocean floor this afternoon.

The search however was eventually called off due to windy conditions.

Police divers plan to resume their search tomorrow morning.
