Eight Adelaide police stations to go

Eight small police stations across Adelaide will be closed as part of a review of South Australian police operations.

Police Commissioner Gary Burns confirmed the closures on Tuesday but says there will be no reduction in the number of officers.

"I realise that some people see a reduction in bricks and mortar as a reduction in service, but that could not be further from the truth," Mr Burns said.

"People, not buildings, are at the heart of a responsive policing service."

Mr Burns said patrols do not respond from the small stations which receive only three to six inquiries each day.

The stations will be closed by June 30 and are dotted across the Adelaide suburbs.

Police say the farthest anyone will have to travel to seek police assistance is nine kilometres and some of the smaller stations are just two or three kilometres from a larger station.

Mr Burns said concerns over public safety were also unfounded.

"A police officer in a highly visible patrol car has a greater road safety and crime reduction impact than a police sign in a shopping centre or an officer behind a desk," he said.
