The RSPCA has appealed for help to find a duck seen with a knife embedded in its head at an Adelaide Hills park.

The animal welfare group said its rescue officers had tried and failed to find the duck after receiving photographs of it at Byethorne Park in Nairne.

The RSPCA believes the injury is the result of "an appalling, deliberate act of cruelty".

"If still alive, this duck requires urgent veterinary attention," the RSPCA wrote on Facebook.

The appeal was posted last night, with anyone who saw "unusual activity" in the park last week urged to come forward.

Penalties for aggravated animal cruelty include a maximum four years imprisonment or a fine of up to $50,000, the RSPCA said.

Anyone with information should contact the RSPCA on 1300 4 777 22.
