Children to get a say on commissioner

Children as young as four will get a say in the controversial appointment of a children's commissioner in South Australia.

The state government is waiting until a royal commission into child protection delivers its findings before introducing legislation and making an appointment.

Before those findings the Department of Education and Child Development has called on children from four to 18 to have their say on what qualities a commissioner needs to have.

Chair of the Council for the Care of Children Professor Fiona Arney says it's essential children are given a voice in the appointment of someone who will advocate for their best interests.

"Children and young people are well informed, they are the experts in their own lives and can tell us about how they want to be represented," Prof Arney said on Tuesday.

The commissioner will play a critical role in providing oversight on the development and wellbeing of children.

But the role has drawn criticism, largely over the state government's decision not to provide the commissioner with investigative powers.

The state opposition says such powers are essential to give children the best possible protection.
