When police saw the vehicle stopped a short time later on Sir Thomas Mitchell Road, an officer approached it on foot.

As the Audi hatchback allegedly sped towards him, a police officer opened fire, discharging four shots - three in the windscreen, one in the bonnet.

The car missed the constable but rammed the vehicle with his partner inside before driving off.

The fugitive was found this morning hiding in a backyard shed in North Bondi.

Lau Toro, a resident near the dumped stolen Audi, alerted police to his whereabouts more than five hours after the initial incident.

After being sprung by detectives, the 37-year-old, who is known to police, was stretchered out by paramedics and was believed to be intoxicated.

"For the offender to take the actions that he's taken, it's certainly well below the expectations of the community," Detective Superintendent Jodi Radmore said.

The hatchback, which was allegedly stolen from Double Bay overnight, is now being examined by forensic officers.

"We have identified the owners of that vehicle, it has been identified that (the car) had been stolen," Radmore said.

She also said the officers involved are okay.
