A food delivery driver has told of the terror he felt as he was ambushed by machete-wielding carjackers in Melbourne's east.

Muhammad Waqas, 28, was lured to a home in Ringwood last night with an unusual request.

"The only thing that was suspicious is that the order has a hash brown from Macca's," he told 9News.

"There's nothing in this, only a hash brown."

After the 28-year-old dropped off the DoorDash order, he became the target of a planned attack from a group of thugs hiding in bushes nearby.

"More than three people jumped from the side and they had a machete. They opened the door," he said.

After demanding his keys, the masked thugs took off in his Toyota Yaris as he ran back to the house for help.

"The only thing I had to do is run for my life," he said.

"The house owner called the police and he also told me that this order is fake, that they did not make any order."

They were later charged by police.

Police said while the alleged carjackings happened in the same suburb, they did not believe they were linked at this stage.

Officers are working to find Waqas' car and the group that stole it.

"It's very scary when I remember this, like someone tried to hit me with a machete," Waqas said.
