Relatives left disgusted after war graves ransacked

Relatives have been left disgusted after almost 50 graves, including many belonging to war veterans, were ransacked in a shocking attack in Melbourne’s south.

Callous thieves attacked the Frankston Cemetery earlier this month, tearing plaques from 48 graves.

When Veterans Affairs officers audited the grave yard they found 15 of the ransacked graves belonged to war veterans.

A Victoria Cross winner is buried at Frankston, but his grave was not disturbed.

Police believe the burglars hit the graveyard on May 12 in a targeted attack looking for scrap metal.

Most of the plaques are made of brass, meaning they’d probably only fetch about $3 a kilogram if sold as scrap.

“People put pride into these plaques, they have a meaning so that the people will be remembered forever,” one relative, Liz Sullivan, said.
