Teen dead after Qld bus crash

BRISBANE, Feb 16 AAP - A teenager is dead, one person has lost a limb and others have suffered head injuries after a bus rolled on Queensland's Whitsunday Coast.

The 19-year-old man died in Proserpine Hospital, hours after the bus left the road and overturned at Cannon Valley, near Airlie Beach, around 1pm on Tuesday.

Ten others were badly injured, including three who remain in a critical condition.

The Queensland Ambulance Service's Danny Murphy said two suffered severe arm injuries.

"We've had one patient had an arm amputated and the other patient had to have the skin pulled off of their arm," he said.

One woman was pinned under the bus while several sustained fractures and abrasions.

Those injured were as young as six months and as old as 79.

It's unclear what caused the bus, which was carrying 13 people, to roll and end up on its side off the edge of the Shute Harbour Road.

"It was a very bright sunny day (with the crash) happening on what appeared to be a straight stretch of road and reasons why the accident occurred at this particular stage are not yet clear," said officer-in-charge of Proserpine Ambulance Station Gavin Cousens.

"The Queensland Police Service are investigating what the cause of the situation was."

The state's chief health officer, Dr Jeannette Young, has activated Queensland's Health Emergency Co-ordination Centre to manage the response to the incident.
