Mystery caller phoned police for welfare check before woman's body was found inside Townsville unit

The body of a 47-year-old woman was found inside a unit in north Queensland after a mystery caller contacted police with a welfare concern.

Homicide detectives are investigating after the woman was found dead in a unit in Garbutt, Townsville about 1.45pm yesterday.

Detective Inspector Damien Smith this afternoon told media the woman's cause of death was still being determined and an autopsy was underway.

The woman's body was found after an unidentified caller phoned for a welfare check, reportedly through a pay phone.

He said no arrests have been made and the investigation remains in the early stages.

No weapons have been seized from the scene.

Smith said the woman, who was known in her local area, may have died in early November.

He confirmed police had been called to the area on previous occasions.

He described the timing of the alleged murder as "unfortunate" after two other women were killed in alleged domestic violence-related attacks in the Townville area recently.
