Homeless people say they've been told to move for Queensland show

About 50 homeless people say they have been told they need to pack up their tents and move to make way for a local show near Brisbane.

Some say they'll refuse to move, with new figures showing the number of Queenslanders waiting for social housing is growing.

Homeless people like Shane have been living next to the Pine Rivers showgrounds but claim they're now being moved on by the local council, for the Pine Rivers Show, in Moreton Bay.

He said they were facing "a boot out and figure it out for ourselves".

It's something the council denies.

Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon said she "wasn't aware of a request to move the people on".

"That's not a position of the Queensland government," she said.

More than 45,000 Queenslanders are on soaring social housing waitlist - an increase of almost 17,000 in the last quarter.

The biggest rises were in Moreton Bay (462), Ipswich (387), Logan (222) and the Redlands (194).

But the minister is accused of trying to bury the information, and last Friday deflected questions about the figures before quietly uploading them to a website on Friday night.

"I committed to reporting quarterly. The LNP never committed to reporting quarterly and I'll make sure that data is released in due course," Scanlon said.

Opposition Leader David Crisafulli said they're "figures that the government were so embarrassed that they had to release it late one afternoon on a Friday".

After 9News raised the Pine Rivers Showgrounds evictions at today's press conference, homelessness support services were sent to the showgrounds.
