Man charged with attempted murder after Gold Coast siege

A 36-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after a 12-hour siege on the Gold Coast.

The drama began when the Southport man allegedly fired a shot at a vehicle on Anne Street at around 11.30pm (AEST) on Christmas Eve.

Police found the man at a unit block on nearby White Street.

When he refused to come out and allegedly fired another shot, they declared an emergency and locked down the street.

Neighbours were evacuated and locals told to stay away for their own safety as police tried to determine whether anyone else was in the unit with him.

Train and light rail services were also suspended and traffic diverted from the area.

Eventually, just before 11am on Thursday, the man was walked out of the property in police custody.

The 36-year-old was charged with attempted murder, deprivation of liberty, assault occasioning bodily harm and unlawful possession of a weapon.

He is due to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on Friday.
