A man has been stabbed twice in the chest in front of shocked parents and children at a Gold Coast sports field.

The 49-year-old man was allegedly attacked by another man at Firth Park in Mudgeeraba about 3pm on Wednesday.

By the time police arrived on the scene the alleged attacker had fled but he was located a short distance away outside a Christian college.

He was arrested at gunpoint but no charges have been laid at this stage.

It's alleged the man was beaten after being stabbed with one witness telling reporters about the brazen attack.

"Highly aggressive, like he was at my daughter's window bashing the guy while my child's watching it all happen," Sheridan Opetaia told the Seven Network.

The victim was treated at the scene and has been taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious condition.

It's understood the two men know each other.
