Law clerk blasted for speaking to press

A magistrate has called out a young Gold Coast law clerk for speaking to the media as a "legal representative", a year after he was fined for masquerading as a solicitor on social media and in court.

Jacob Reichman, 23, who works for barrister Chris Rosser, spoke to reporters on Tuesday on behalf of Jarrod Ronald Simmons, who had just appeared in court for allegedly being involved in the return of an abducted echidna called Piggie.

When the case went back to court on Wednesday, Magistrate Kerry McGee said she was shocked to have seen Mr Reichman appear on the previous night's television news bulletin.

She warned Mr Rosser to ensure his clerk didn't talk to reporters again.

"He has no right to speak to the press," she said.

Mr Reichman was fined $1000 in August last year after pleading guilty to representing himself as a legal practitioner and engaging in legal practice when he wasn't entitled to.

Screen grabs from his Facebook, Instagram and Linked In accounts were tendered in court and showed the wannabe solicitor had posted screenshots of himself appearing on television news bulletins under the title "legal representative".

No conviction was recorded and Reichman has since graduated.
