A car dealership is demanding thousands from a Brisbane woman after they made a costly mistake during her car trade.

Military veteran Janine St Claire agreed to trade her Toyota RAV4 Edge wagon for a BMW at Prestige Auto Traders this week.

St Claire was told her car was worth $54,697 in trade-in value following an inspection by a car salesman.

She paid the difference between the two cars and purchased the BMW.

The dealership called St Claire on her drive home, demanding an extra $5000 as they thought the RAV4 was a hybrid - which it was not.

St Claire says she never claimed the car was a hybrid, nor was it discussed during the trade-in process.

"(They said) 'We gave you too much money for your car because we made a mistake and thought it was hybrid,'" she told 9News.

In the sales contract obtained by 9News, there was no mention of the car being a hybrid.

The dealership is now threatening legal action against St Claire, demanding she pays for their mistake.

"So (they) want me to pay for (their) error or just give back the car and pretend it never happened," she said.

"(It's been) stressful, it's been awful, I've been in tears (since) yesterday.

"There's a grey cloud over the whole situation."

Prestige Auto Traders told 9News it is working to resolve the issue.
