Professor Richard Scolyer reveals brain cancer is advancing after its return

Acclaimed melanoma expert and former Australian of the Year Richard Scolyer has revealed his brain cancer is advancing following its return.

Scolyer, 58, was diagnosed with an aggressive glioblastoma in 2023 and was given just eight months to live.

In a social media post, he said an MRI scan yesterday revealed another advancement of glioblastoma in his brain's left side.

Scolyer - jointly named Australian of the Year in 2024 alongside fellow cancer specialist Professor Georgina Long – remained positive despite the concerning update on his condition.

"Whilst this may not be the best direction to be heading with my changes, amazingly (to me), I still seem keen to keep living, loving and having fun, whenever possible," he wrote on Instagram.

"I feel like there are quite a few people on my team (including my family & friends) and they make me happy & proud."

When the cancer returned, he underwent surgery in March to remove as much of the tumour as possible.

Scolyer was diagnosed with the same aggressive cancer in 2023 and put himself forward for experimental treatment.

He underwent experimental immunotherapy treatment for his glioblastoma, developed by Long, his co-medical director of Melanoma Institute Australia, and had no sign of recurrence for 18 months.

The pair were awarded the Australian of the Year award in 2024 for their work in melanoma research and treatment.
