Family mourning 'cheeky' rugby league star killed in Perth car crash

The heartbroken family of a budding rugby league star who was killed in a Perth car crash has gathered at a makeshift memorial after rushing to Western Australia from interstate and overseas.

Malakai Chase, 19, is being remembered for his "cheeky nature".

His mother rushed from New Zealand to her son's side, but he had already died.

Chase was critically injured on Friday night while driving to a skate park in Scarborough in the city's north-west.

His car ploughed into a tree on Scarborough Beach Rd.

Chase, who was one of 10 siblings, was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital but couldn't be saved.

His mother, Lana Gideoa, told 9News he was a "happy-go-lucky" kid who "never got into trouble".

The teen's grandparents also flew over from the east coast.

"(I) think I've cried too much I've got nothing left to be honest," family member Cindy Lancheres said.

Chase's father was able to said goodbye before he died, she said.

"We just laid in his son's bed, we just lay there talking, remembering like we just couldn't make sense of anything," Lancheres said.

Chase was a promising rugby league player with a dream of playing professionally.

He was most recently a full back for North Beach Sea Eagles.

Lancheres said he was "very cheeky, very funny, always lit up the room", adding "he was definitely going to be someone".

"We will remember that's all we got is the memories and there will be no forgetting," she said.

Tokens including a games console were laid at the crash site.

Chase's passenger, also 19, is still in hospital as major crash detectives continue their investigation.
