Woman assaulted in Maitland hammer attack

A woman has suffered serious head injuries after she was reportedly assaulted with a hammer in Maitland, NSW, this afternoon.

Paramedics transported the 38-year-old woman to John Hunter Hospital after the assault in a Catherine Street home.

NSW Police arrested a 23-year-old man at a nearby car park a short time later.

The man is being questioned and police have established a crime scene at the home.
