Elderly good Samaritan dies on Sydney road

An elderly good Samaritan has died from a suspected heart attack after he was run over by a broken down car he was helping to push off a western Sydney road.

The 82-year-old had stopped to help a woman whose car stalled in the middle of Marina Close in Cecil Hills on Wednesday morning, police say.

But while moving the car the man fell and was run over, breaking his ankle before being dragged for a short distance, a police spokesman told ABC Radio.

The man then suffered a suspected cardiac arrest and died at the scene.

Social media has been flooded with comments labelling the victim a "gentleman" and a "gem the world no longer has" for his selfless act.

Meanwhile, in the southern NSW rural town of Yass, a 46-year-old man from Orange died when his car and a truck collided on Lachlan Valley Way on Wednesday night.

The truck driver, a 68-year-old Victorian man, was airlifted to Canberra Hospital in a stable condition.
